Porcelain as a technical product
Porcelain tile is the workhorse of contemporary specification. It is a dense, low-porosity ceramic fired at high temperature from a refined clay body, and its value lies in measurable properties rather than in appearance: low water absorption, high breaking strength, good abrasion and chemical resistance, and dimensional stability. Those properties make it appropriate for applications where a standard ceramic tile would fail, and they are why architects and specifiers write porcelain into projects.

Body types, glazes and finishes
The distinction that matters most is whether the wear surface is a glaze or the body itself. Glazed porcelain carries a fired glaze which provides the design and the surface properties; the body underneath provides strength and low porosity. Because the design is printed and then glazed, the visual range is effectively unlimited and the cost is moderate. The trade-off is that deep abrasion eventually exposes the body, so the glaze's abrasion class must be matched honestly to the traffic.
Unglazed and through-body porcelain has no glaze layer: colour and composition run through the tile. Abrasion does not change its appearance, which makes it the correct choice for industrial floors, heavy public traffic and any area where deep scratching is likely. It is more expensive and its design range is narrower, being limited to what can be achieved in the body composition rather than in print.
Surface finish is a functional decision as much as an aesthetic one. Matt and satin finishes offer good slip resistance and hide marks well, which is why they dominate contemporary residential and commercial flooring. Gloss and polished finishes maximise light reflection and visual richness but reduce slip resistance and show scratches and footmarks. Lappato or semi-polished finishes are a genuine middle ground, with a partially polished surface that keeps more slip resistance than a full polish. Structured and textured finishes are specified for external paving, wet rooms, pool surrounds and ramps.
Anti-bacterial, anti-stain and easy-clean surface treatments are available on glazed products where the application justifies them, and we specify them rather than assuming. Where a buyer is supplying healthcare, food-service or hospitality projects, these treatments are often written into the specification and need to be confirmed at the plant rather than claimed in a brochure.
Technical properties and standards
Porcelain is specified against measured properties, and the relevant framework in most markets is the ISO 13006 product standard with testing to the ISO 10545 method series, or the equivalent regional standard. Water absorption determines the classification of the tile group. Breaking strength and modulus of rupture confirm structural adequacy relative to thickness and support condition. Abrasion resistance is measured as a PEI class on glazed surfaces and as deep abrasion volume on unglazed products.
Beyond those, we arrange testing for slip resistance in the form your market uses, whether a dry or wet coefficient of friction, an R rating from a ramp test, or a pendulum test value; stain resistance and chemical resistance including resistance to acids, alkalis and household chemicals; frost resistance by freeze-thaw cycling for external use in cold climates; thermal shock resistance; linear thermal expansion; moisture expansion; and colour fastness to light. Where lead and cadmium release matters for a glazed surface in a food-contact context, that too can be tested.
Frost resistance is the property most often overlooked by buyers importing into cold climates, and getting it wrong produces spalled tiles after the first winter. A tile's frost resistance depends on its porosity and pore structure, and it must be verified by freeze-thaw testing rather than inferred from the fact that the tile is called porcelain. We insist on test evidence for external applications in freezing climates.
We are careful to distinguish a plant's generic type-approval report from testing on your production lot. For project submissions reviewed by a consultant, lot-specific testing is usually what is genuinely required. It has to be arranged before production, so we ask about submission requirements at the quotation stage rather than after the tiles are made.
Formats, thickness and installation implications
Porcelain formats from Morbi cover 300 by 600, 600 by 600, 600 by 1200, 800 by 800, 800 by 1200, 800 by 1600 and 1200 by 1200 millimetres, plank formats for wood visuals from 150 by 900 up to 200 by 1200 and longer, small formats and mosaics, and large panels. Matching trim, skirting, step tread, riser and bullnose pieces are available on most ranges, and we confirm availability of trims at the time of ordering rather than after the floor tile has shipped.
Thickness runs from around 8 to 12 millimetres on standard products, with 20 millimetre thick porcelain pavers available for external and raised-floor applications and thin panels of 5 to 6 millimetres for overlay and wall use. Each has installation implications we discuss rather than leave to be discovered: 20 millimetre pavers can be dry-laid on gravel or pedestals; thin panels need a fully bonded, very flat substrate and specific handling and cutting equipment.
Large-format porcelain is popular and unforgiving. Successful installation needs a flat substrate, back-buttering, a suitable adhesive class, a levelling system to control lippage, and correct handling equipment on site. Where a buyer is new to large formats, we say so and recommend either a smaller format or clear communication to the installer, because a beautiful 1200 by 1200 tile laid on an uneven screed with a notched trowel will fail.
Rectification, warpage and dimensional tolerance become critical as format increases. We verify length, width, thickness, straightness, rectangularity, flatness and warpage on sampled pieces against the applicable standard, and we pay particular attention to warpage on large formats because it directly determines lippage. On rectified large-format orders, these dimensional checks are the most valuable part of the inspection.
Design ranges, faces and visual consistency
Digital printing has made porcelain visually convincing, and the quality difference between a good and a poor range lies mostly in the number of distinct faces. A range with four to eight different faces avoids the visible repetition that gives away a printed floor; a range with one or two faces produces a pattern that becomes obvious across a large area. We check the number of faces in a design and tell you, because it is rarely stated in a catalogue.
Colour and pattern registration are verified on sampled pieces: print alignment relative to the tile edge, consistency of colour saturation across the tile and between tiles, absence of print defects such as banding, misregistration and nozzle dropouts, and glaze defects including pinholes, crawling and blistering. These are the defects that get past a casual inspection and appear across an installed floor.
Shade and batch control is handled the same way as for vitrified tile. Production within a single firing batch wherever possible, batch and shade codes marked on every carton, shades separated, and advance notice with an agreed handling plan where an order must span batches. Buyers should also keep a reserve from the same batch for future repairs, since a matching replacement will not be obtainable later.
Quality inspection and grading
Grade is stated explicitly in our quotations, because grade rather than product is often what separates two prices in Morbi. Premium, commercial and economy grades differ in dimensional tolerance, permitted surface defects, shade consistency and the proportion of seconds acceptable per box. A price that undercuts the market by a wide margin is almost always a lower grade, and the consequence appears at the installer's hands.
Pre-shipment inspection covers dimensional verification on sampled pieces, surface and glaze defect inspection against an agreed acceptance level, print quality and face-variation check, shade comparison against the approved sample under standard lighting, confirmation of design, size, finish and grade against the order, piece count and carton marking verification, pallet integrity and loading condition. Findings are reported with photographs before the container is sealed.
Where a lot fails, we hold it. That sounds obvious but it is the single most important difference between buying through a merchant exporter with its own quality function and buying directly from a trading office that is paid on shipped volume. Our commercial interest is in your repeat order, which means an inspection result has to be able to stop a shipment.
Packing, loading and landed cost
Porcelain is dense and heavy, and freight is a substantial part of landed cost, so loading efficiency matters. Tiles are packed in export cartons printed with size, design, piece count and coverage, palletised, strapped, shrink-wrapped or hooded, with corner and edge protection, and loaded to a plan that reaches the destination's legal road weight limit rather than the container's theoretical maximum.
For buyers with a broad product requirement, consolidation is the main lever on landed cost. A single container can carry several porcelain designs and sizes, plus vitrified tile, wall tile, sanitary ware or other categories entirely, with an itemised packing list so the shipment can be checked on arrival. Buyers building a showroom range typically use this heavily, taking small quantities of many designs in one shipment rather than committing to a container per design.
We advise ordering a percentage above the installed area to cover cutting waste, pattern layout, transit breakage and future repair, with the correct allowance depending on the format, the layout and the complexity of the room. Ordering exactly the measured area is a reliable way to run short during installation, and the replacement will be from a different batch.

That is a far better process than matching a catalogue image and discovering the performance later.
For project work we quote against a consultant's specification clause by clause, stating where the offered product meets, exceeds or falls short of each requirement, and we flag internal contradictions in the specification before submitting. Where lot-specific test reports, conformity certification or a mock-up panel are required for approval, we arrange them as part of the programme rather than as an afterthought.
Physical samples are supplied before commitment, and a full box can be sent for larger orders so an installer can lay a trial area. For project buyers we can also arrange a larger mock-up where the specification requires approval of shade variation and layout before production is released.

Is porcelain suitable for external use in a cold climate?
Only if frost resistance is verified by freeze-thaw testing. Being called porcelain does not guarantee it: frost performance depends on porosity and pore structure, and an unverified tile can spall after one winter. For external installation in freezing climates we insist on test evidence, and 20 mm porcelain pavers are usually the appropriate product.
What is the difference between glazed and through-body porcelain?
Glazed porcelain carries a printed and fired glaze that provides the design and surface properties, giving an unlimited visual range at moderate cost, but deep abrasion eventually exposes the body. Through-body porcelain has colour and composition running through the tile, so abrasion does not change its appearance, making it correct for industrial and heavy public traffic at higher cost and with a narrower design range.
How can I tell a good digitally printed range from a poor one?
Mostly by the number of distinct faces. Four to eight faces avoid the visible repetition that gives a printed floor away; one or two faces produce an obvious pattern across a large area. Catalogues rarely state this, so we check it and tell you, along with print registration, colour saturation consistency and any banding or nozzle-dropout defects.
Do you supply matching trims and step pieces?
Most ranges have matching skirting, step tread, riser, bullnose and trim pieces, and we confirm their availability at the time of ordering rather than after the floor tile has shipped. Trim availability is a common gap in tile importing and it is much easier to solve before production than afterwards.
What should I know before ordering large-format porcelain?
Installation is unforgiving. It needs a flat substrate, back-buttering, a suitable adhesive class, a lippage levelling system and proper handling equipment. Warpage and dimensional tolerance matter more as format increases, so we check them carefully on sampled pieces.
