Wall tile as its own product category

Ceramic wall tile is frequently treated as a lesser version of floor tile, which misunderstands the product. A wall tile is engineered for a different job: it carries no traffic load, so its body can be lighter and more porous, which makes it cheaper, lighter to ship and much easier to cut and install. In exchange it must have excellent glaze quality, precise dimensions for neat vertical coursing, and a design range that works in the very visible environments of kitchens and bathrooms.

Formats, coordination and range building

The dominant wall formats from Morbi are 300 by 450, 300 by 600, 250 by 400 and 200 by 300 millimetres, with 600 by 600 and 300 by 300 used for larger wall areas and subway or metro formats such as 75 by 300 and 100 by 300 for feature applications. Mosaic sheets, pencil and quadrant trims, listellos and decorative strips complete the range. Thickness typically runs from 6 to 9 millimetres, which keeps weight and cost down.

A wall tile range sells as a scheme, so coordination matters commercially. A well-built range pairs a base tile with a coordinating decor at the same size, a complementary listello or border, and often a matching floor tile in a vitrified or porcelain body. Glaze quality, decoration and surface defects

Since a wall tile's entire value is on its surface, glaze quality is the specification. We inspect for glaze defects that are easy to miss individually and glaring across an installed wall: pinholes, blisters, crawling, crazing, glaze thinning at edges, dry spots, specks and inclusions, and orange-peel texture where glaze application was uneven. Acceptance levels are agreed before production and inspection is carried out against them under standard lighting.

Digital printing has widened the design range considerably, and print quality is checked on the same basis as porcelain: registration relative to the tile edge, colour saturation consistency across and between tiles, banding, nozzle dropouts and misregistration. On patterned and encaustic-look designs, where several tiles combine into a repeating motif, we additionally check that the pattern actually aligns across pieces, which is a common failure on cheaper ranges.

Relief and structured surfaces need their own checks. Depth and definition of the relief, glaze pooling in recesses, colour variation between raised and recessed areas, and consistency of the pattern across the batch all affect how a feature wall reads. These products photograph well and vary considerably in execution, so a physical sample is essential rather than optional.

Crazing resistance deserves a specific mention because it is the classic wall-tile failure. Crazing is a network of fine cracks in the glaze that appears weeks or months after installation, caused by a mismatch between the thermal and moisture expansion of the glaze and the body. It is tested by autoclave, and where a buyer has had crazing problems previously we specify the test rather than trusting the plant's word.

Dimensional accuracy and installation quality

Wall tiles are laid in visible, regular courses with narrow joints, often against fixed edges and around fittings, so dimensional variation shows immediately. We verify length and width tolerance, thickness variation, edge straightness, rectangularity, surface flatness and warpage against the applicable standard. Wedging - where a tile is slightly out of square - is the defect that ruins a wall most efficiently, since the error accumulates across a course.

Body properties are checked as well, even though the wall tile body carries no traffic. Water absorption on a wall tile body is deliberately higher than on porcelain, which is normal and correct, but it must remain within the classification for the product group and it affects the adhesive specification. Breaking strength must be adequate for handling and installation, and we check it because a body that is too weak generates breakage during cutting and at the trade counter.

We advise buyers on adhesive and installation requirements rather than leaving them to be worked out on site. A porous wall tile body absorbs water from adhesive quickly, so the adhesive class and open time matter; a large-format wall tile needs a suitable notched trowel and back-buttering; a relief surface needs care to keep grout out of the texture. Passing this information to the trade counter reduces complaints that would otherwise come back as product faults.

Grading, shade control and batch discipline

Grade is stated in the quotation. Wall tile is graded in Morbi on the same premium, commercial and economy basis as floor tile, with the difference showing in dimensional tolerance, glaze defects, shade consistency and seconds per box. Wall tile grades are especially worth attention because a wall is examined at close range under direct light, which is the least forgiving inspection condition a tile ever faces.

Shade control follows the same batch discipline as our other tile categories: single firing batch per design wherever possible, batch and shade codes marked on every carton, shades separated, and advance notice with an agreed plan where an order must span batches. Because wall tile is often sold in small quantities to many customers, we also advise distributors to keep batch information on their stock so a top-up sale can be matched or the customer warned.

Pre-shipment inspection covers dimensional checks, glaze and print defect inspection against the agreed acceptance level, shade comparison against approved samples, pattern alignment verification on repeating designs, confirmation of design, size, finish and grade against the order, piece count and carton marking, and pallet and loading condition, reported with photographs before sealing.

Packing, weight advantage and consolidation

Wall tile's lighter body is a real commercial advantage in freight terms. Because a 6 to 9 millimetre wall tile weighs substantially less per square metre than a 10 millimetre vitrified floor tile, a container carries considerably more coverage. That changes the landed-cost calculation in wall tile's favour and makes mixed containers easier to balance to the weight limit.

Tiles are packed in export cartons printed with design, size, piece count and coverage, palletised, strapped and wrapped with corner protection. Because wall tile bodies are more fragile in handling than porcelain, packing and pallet stability get particular attention, and we specify void filling and load securing rather than leaving it to the loader.

Documentation is issued as a complete package: commercial invoice, packing list itemised by design, size and grade with batch codes, certificate of origin, transport document, insurance where requested, and any test reports specified. Where your market requires conformity certification or specific labelling before ceramic tile can be sold, we confirm the requirement at order stage and route production to a plant that holds the relevant certification.
