The fittings that hold a building together

Between the structural steel and the finished building sits a large family of fittings that rarely gets specified with the attention it deserves: brackets and cleats, base and cap plates, gusset plates, connectors and hangers, clamps and clips, support and hanging systems, threaded rod and rigging components, railing and balustrade fittings, and glass and facade attachments. These items carry load, and a bracket made from unspecified steel with an undocumented weld is a structural component with no evidence behind it.

VP Global Exim supplies steel fittings from India with the documentation that a load-bearing item requires: material certification traceable to the heat, weld procedures and welder qualification where welding is involved, dimensional verification against the drawing, coating specification and thickness verification, and load testing where the item's function demands it. That is a different proposition from buying a bracket by the kilogram.

Materials, grades and certification

Structural fittings are made from structural steel, and the grade must be specified rather than assumed. We supply items in common structural grades with defined yield strength, and where a specification names a grade to a particular standard we cross-reference to the available equivalent and present chemical and mechanical comparison for approval. Where impact toughness at low temperature is required, that must be specified separately, because standard structural grades are not supplied with guaranteed toughness unless the sub-grade calls for it.

Stainless steel fittings are supplied in austenitic grades, with 316-type material specified for coastal, marine, pool and chemically exposed environments and 304-type for general external use inland. For railing and balustrade work, stainless is usually chosen for appearance as much as corrosion resistance, and finish quality then becomes a specification item in its own right, covering polish level, weld dressing and blending, and passivation after fabrication.

Material certification is supplied per heat, with chemical analysis and mechanical properties reported and the heat number linked to the manufactured item. Where your specification requires EN 10204 type 3.1 or third-party endorsed 3.2 certification, we arrange it at order stage. On load-bearing fittings, material certification is not paperwork; it is the only evidence that the item can carry what it is being asked to carry.

Traceability is maintained through fabrication. Heat numbers are recorded and transferred by marking as material is cut, so that a finished bracket can be traced back to its plate. Where a project requires physical traceability on the component, we apply hard stamping or durable marking. This is standard practice on structural work and it is routinely absent from imported fittings bought as generic hardware.

Fabrication, welding and dimensional control

Fabricated fittings are produced by laser or plasma cutting, punching, drilling, bending and welding, and each operation is controlled against the drawing. Hole positions and diameters are critical on connection items because a bracket with holes in the wrong place is scrap rather than a rework opportunity, and we verify hole layout with templates or coordinate measurement on first articles and at intervals through production.

Welding on structural fittings is carried out to a qualified welding procedure by qualified welders, with procedure specifications and welder qualification records supplied. Weld size and type are as drawn, joint preparation is specified, and inter-pass temperature and heat input are controlled where the material and thickness require it. Weld inspection is visual against a written acceptance standard as a baseline, with dye penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic or radiographic examination applied according to the criticality of the item.

Distortion control matters on plate and bracket fabrication because a base plate that is not flat does not bear evenly and a bracket that has twisted does not fit. Weld sequence, fixturing and, where necessary, post-weld straightening or stress relief are specified. Flatness on bearing plates is verified rather than assumed, since it directly affects load transfer.

Dimensional verification is documented on first articles and sampled through production, covering overall dimensions, hole layout and diameter, plate thickness, weld size, squareness and flatness. Reports are supplied with actual measured values. For items produced in quantity we agree a sampling plan; for critical or low-quantity items we inspect every piece, because on a structural fitting the cost of inspection is trivial relative to the cost of a mis-drilled connection discovered on site.

Coatings and corrosion protection by exposure

Coating specification should follow exposure and design life, and the difference between options is measured in decades rather than years. Hot-dip galvanising provides a thick metallurgically bonded zinc layer and is the standard for structural fittings in external and aggressive environments, with coating mass specified according to the applicable standard and the required service life. Electroplated zinc is appropriate only for internal and sheltered use. Zinc-flake coatings suit high-strength items where hydrogen embrittlement is a concern.

Duplex systems, where paint or powder coating is applied over hot-dip galvanising, give the longest service life and are specified for coastal and industrial atmospheres. They require correct surface preparation of the galvanised layer, and a paint applied over untreated fresh galvanising will delaminate, so surface preparation is specified explicitly rather than left to the coater.

For items that will be welded on site, coating has to be planned around it. Galvanising is damaged by welding and produces harmful fumes, so either connections are designed to be bolted, or coating is applied after site welding, or a weldable primer with subsequent touch-up is specified. We raise this at drawing review because it is regularly overlooked and creates an unpleasant choice on site.

Coating verification includes thickness measurement at defined points against the specified mass or thickness, adhesion testing, visual inspection for bare spots, runs and inclusions, and salt-spray testing where an hour rating is specified. On galvanised items, we check for excess zinc in threads and holes, which is a common cause of assembly problems on site.

Load ratings and safety-critical items

Some fittings carry rated loads and must be treated as safety components rather than hardware. Rigging and lifting items - eye bolts, shackles, turnbuckles, hooks, lifting eyes - carry working load limits and are governed by specific standards requiring proof testing, marking and certification. We supply these only as certified product with proof test certificates and legible marking, and we do not supply unmarked lifting hardware regardless of price.

Support and hanging systems for pipe, duct and services carry rated loads that depend on the fixing into the structure as much as on the hanger itself. Published load tables must state their assumptions, and we supply data with those assumptions declared. Where a buyer intends to use a fitting beyond its rated capacity or in a configuration outside the test basis, we say so rather than supplying it silently.

Structural connection fittings such as brackets and cleats derive their capacity from material grade, section dimensions, weld size and the bolts used, and their design capacity is properly established by an engineer rather than by a supplier. We manufacture to a designed drawing and provide the material, weld and dimensional evidence that the design assumed. Where a buyer asks us to supply a fitting for a structural application without a design behind it, we will fabricate to a drawing but will not certify a capacity we have not been given.

Railing, balustrade and glass fittings

Railing and balustrade fittings are a substantial part of this category and combine structural and aesthetic requirements. We supply posts, base flanges, handrail brackets, elbows and bends, end caps, tube connectors, glass clamps, standoff and spider fittings, spigots, cable and rod tensioning systems, and complete modular railing systems in stainless steel and, where specified, aluminium and steel with coating.

For glass balustrade fittings, the interaction between fitting and glass is what determines safety, and it depends on the glass type and thickness, the gasket or resin, the fixing into the structure and the clamping arrangement. These are tested as systems, and a fitting cannot be described as suitable for a given loading without reference to the glass and the substrate. We supply system data rather than component claims, and we insist on knowing the glass specification before confirming a fitting.

Finish quality on visible railing components is a specification in itself. Polish level, consistency between components, weld dressing and blending on fabricated items, and passivation after fabrication all determine whether an installation looks correct. Stainless steel that has been fabricated without proper passivation will develop surface rust in external use, which buyers frequently attribute to the wrong material grade when it is actually a finishing failure.

Packing, documentation and site delivery

Steel fittings are heavy, awkward and easily damaged in ways that matter: bent brackets, damaged threads, scraped coatings and lost small components. Items are packed with thread protection, edge and corner protection, and separation so coated surfaces do not abrade against each other. Small fittings are bagged and boxed by item with counts verified; heavy items are crated in ISPM 15 compliant timber or strapped to skids with the load path designed through the structure.

Because these goods often go directly to a construction site, packing is planned for site handling and storage. Package weights are set for available equipment, packing is weather-resistant for outdoor storage, and marking identifies the item, drawing reference, quantity, heat number where relevant and, for project supply, the zone or level the items belong to. Site-based sorting of unmarked fittings is a substantial hidden cost that good marking eliminates.

Documentation supplied includes commercial invoice and packing list, certificate of origin, mill test certificates linked to heat numbers, welding procedure specifications and welder qualification records, non-destructive test reports where applicable, dimensional inspection reports, coating certificates with thickness records, proof test certificates on rated items, and a certificate of conformity referencing drawing revisions. Quoting steel fittings with us

For fabricated items we need drawings with material grade, dimensions and tolerances, weld specification, coating specification with required mass or thickness, and any testing or certification requirement, along with quantities. For catalogue items we need the standard, size, material, finish and quantity. Where an item is load rated, tell us the rating required and the standard it must be certified to.

We will respond with a quotation, a query list on anything ambiguous in the drawing set, lead times for first article and production, the testing and documentation scope, and where relevant a comment on whether the coating specification suits the stated exposure. Coating specifications that are inadequate for the environment are the single most common issue we raise, because the cost difference is small at order stage and enormous at replacement.

Where you are replacing an existing supply, sending a physical sample alongside the drawing is worthwhile. It regularly reveals that what is currently being delivered differs from what the drawing specifies, particularly in material grade, weld size and coating thickness, and establishing which of the two you actually want is the most useful thing to settle before production starts.

Why does material certification matter on a simple bracket?

Which coating should I specify for an external fitting?

Will you certify the load capacity of a bracket you fabricate?

We manufacture to a designed drawing and provide the material, weld, dimensional and coating evidence that the design assumed. Establishing design capacity is properly an engineer's responsibility, so we will fabricate to your drawing but will not certify a capacity we have not been given. If you need a design, that needs to come from your structural engineer.

How do you handle fittings that will be welded on site?
